The Arizona summer is legendary. Of course you’ve heard stories about frying eggs on the sidewalk, driving with oven mitts, and delicate items melting if you leave them in the car. But even during the ridiculously hot summer, Arizona is lively and enjoyable. You just have to know where to look.
Phoenix area outdoor activities can seem hard to come by during the summer months. In fact, there are many ways to enjoy the desert that won’t leave you burned.

Summer Concerts (April 29- July 1)
McCormick Stillman Railroad Park hosts outdoor evening concerts during the late spring/early summer. These concerts take place during the pleasantly warm evening hours. Bring your own outdoor picnic and enjoy both music and a ride on a miniature train or a carousel. This was a favorite summer activity for the owners of Anything for Baby while their child was growing up! (Another adorable picture from the owners. This kid is 22!!!)

In Arizona, however, trains are one of the most unique and luxurious ways to experience the state. Some of these distinctive excursions bring the charm of the golden age of railroads into the 21st century and into the scenic vistas of the Sonoran Desert and the Mogollon Rim. Others bring the experience of railroading to the small scale, offering a more affordable options to experience. These railroads are worth a trip:

Grand Canyon Railroad, Williams, AZ
The Grand Canyon Railroad operates between Williams, AZ and the Grand Canyon. This 65 mile trip through the Colorado Plateau experiences the diverse landscapes of Northern Arizona. Departing daily at 9:30 AM, the train takes two and a half hours to reach the Grand Canyon, where breathtaking sights will greet you. Tours and excursions at the Canyon are offered on the website in addition to the train ride. Several special events are offered throughout the year, including a Polar Express Train, Steam Saturdays, where the train is replaced by century old Steam Engines, and Pumpkin Patch rides for Halloween.

Verde Canyon Railroad, Clarkdale, AZ
